Does the coffee make us, or do we make the coffee? Waking up each morning, whether in my girly bed with the pillows all fluffed or upside down on the couch with the lights from last night still on- t.v. blasting- remote under my arse, my first thought of the day is- coffee!
How am I going to get it? Fancy latte or black and strong? How ambitious am I actually feeling? What time is it? What day is it?
Over the years I have made it, served it, even got paid to do it at some point. Coffee, like 7-11 (and the combo of both for that matter) have added to my tangled web of life. I have seen many breakups and hookups as folks have stirred their coffee. The coffee has been there to help me get through college and roadtrips, relationships and hardships. I am very confused when people tell me they don't like coffee. If chess is the game of kings, then coffee is surely the drink.
My weekly cups of coffee, like the days of the week, have their own personalities and moods.
9 a.m. on a workday coffee = the coffee that gets your eyes to open and able to function enough to figure out how to open email and listen as people tell you things. Typically from the communal kitchen at the office. Lots of sugar and vanilla soymilk.
7 p.m. on a workday coffee = the perfect soy mocha that is waiting at the local coffee shop for you and a friend as you race to catch up on life and dish the dish over the trashiest magazines ever.
10 a.m. on a Saturday coffee = this can be tricky as there are often 2 options
1. Socks. Surely I must have some, and if I can find them and my glasses and bandana, I can roll down to 7-11 on foot to get some eye-opening house brew that will help me get psyched for all the stuff I need to catch up on today. Like dying my hair, thus, the bandana I wore to 7-11.
2. DIY. Am feeling ambitious and actually woke up early. I want to use my Hello Kitty coffee maker, so I will make 6 cups, drink them all myself and by the time its all over, my apt will be sparkling clean, I will have called my mom, and organized all of my shoes, twice.
Sunday Coffee = strong coffee in the morning made myself because I just felt like doing it and I just want to hang out and make stuff. Then, throughout the day, I will make lots of things that really are not coffee at all, like tea. Lots of little snacks of tea or hot soymilk mixed with orange blossom water. Typically lounging with my boy, both of us on our laptops. We might watch cartoons, we might just listen to techno and dance. There may or may not be chores involved and we will probably be in each others arms at least 50 times.
I often wonder, if I have my Sunday coffee on Monday, will Monday not be so intolerable?
