This Non-Religious Life Episode 19: Mormons, Genesis, and Magic Tricks

This week we’re dealing with a bit of a mixed bag. We begin the conversation with Bob’s recap and thoughts on Joseph Smith and the Golden Plates. Bob went to go see this movie as a bit of “research” for the show and what he came out with was vastly different than what it seemed most people took away. He found a spurious story which at best raises more questions than it answers. All this from a movie which doesn’t even get into Mormon theology.

In the second part of the show we delve into a story which came up about how Evangelicals are beginning to question the historicity of Adam and Eve. We get into the questions this raises about the crucifixion as an absolving sacrifice.

The final bit of the show we spend on magic tricks, the news about the West Memphis 3, and the Satanic Panic. We talk about how Harry Houdini sought to out psychic mediums and frauds, and James Randi’s $1 Million challenge to psychics.

What do you think about these topics? Do you agree that abandoning the Eden story undermines Christian theology? What do you think about magic tricks?
